Described as a “tour de force of vocal virtuosity married to a fabulous stage presence” (Captain Classics – WFCF, St Augustine), mezzo-soprano Regina Torres wields her voice with equal acclaim in opera and musical theatre. Her powerful and beautiful sound has thrilled audiences in her portrayals of such vastly different roles from the dignified and domineering La Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica) to the ethereal La Voix in Les contes d’Hoffmann to the cackling Witch in Hänsel und Gretel. She is also known for her transformation of familiar characters, such as creating a sexy “desperate housewife” out of the normally dowdy Marcellina. Most recently, she added her own distinct touch to Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti as another dissastified housewife, Dinah. She is a Florida favorite of the First Coast Opera and the Central Florida Lyric Opera where she began her professional career after graduating from the prestigious Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University.
As a comedienne, Ms. Torres has brought down the house as the “rapping” Witch in Into the Woods and has become a preferred choice for the Gilbert and Sullivan catalog. In addition to adding gypsy flair to Little Buttercup (H.M.S. Pinafore), her repertoire includes both Pitti-Sing and Katisha (The Mikado), both Tessa and the Duchess of Plaza-Toro (The Gondoliers), Lady Sangazure (The Sorcerer), the Counsel for the Plaintiff (Trial by Jury) and Ruth (The Pirates of Penzance). In her debut with the St. Petersburg Opera as Madame Armfeldt (A Little Night Music), the St. Petersburg Times hailed her performance noting the “delicious inflection to her commentary about the fools around her.”
She has also appeared as a soloist in performances of both Verdi’s and Dvořák’s Requiem (Space Coast Symphony), Bach’s St. John Passion, Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, and a debut in the Bob Carr Auditorium (Orlando, FL) in Handel’s The Messiah. She is a frequent recitalist and enjoys creating unusual programs. Ms. Torres is also one-half of the duo, Mezzolicious, a cabaret ensemble which brings the wonderful aspects of the mezzo-soprano to life in song and theatre.
Ms. Torres received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Florida and a Performance Diploma in Voice from the Indiana University School of Music where she performed on the Mainstage as Ludmilla in The Bartered Bride, Mrs. Gleaton in Susannah, and La Zelatrice in Suor Angelica.
Ms. Torres is prominently featured on the album, Soul of Christ, showcasing sacred works written by Jacksonville composer, Robert Waddell. She is also the voice of the eerie choir improvisation on the track “In Obscura” for The Coronation, for the Oakland-based band Laudanum.
